From Basics to Bullseyes: A Breakdown of Darts for Beginners
Despite the wide range of slang terms which can make darts seem like a incomprehensible and difficult game, the sport is much easier to enjoy than many realize. A classic pub game that has gained widespread popularity across the world, darts combines skill, precision, and a bit of strategy. Whether you are a seasoned player looking for a refresh on the basics or a newcomer trying to get involved, understanding the basics is key to enjoying darts.
The Board
A circular target divided into 20 numbered sections; the board is the heart of any dart game. The ringlet of numbers ranges from 1 to 20, and each of these numbered sections is further separated into single, double, and triple zones. Located in the center of the board, this may be the most well-known part of the board. Containing both an inner and outer ring, the outer ring is known as the “outer bull” while the inner ring is the traditional “bullseye”.
The Setup
Traditionally played with two players or two teams, a game of darts begins with each player (or team) having a score of either 301 or 501. The goal of the game is to reduce this score down to zero. Players take turns throwing three darts each, aiming to earn points by hitting the numbered sections on the board. Because the numbered sections are also divided into three zones, players should aim for the greatest number of points possible.
- Single: The points reflect the number indicated above the segment which the dart has landed in.
- Double: Points in this section are double the number above the segment which the dart lands in.
- Triple: Points in this section are triple the number above the segment which the dart lands in.
When a player hits the bullseye on the outer ring, they score 25 points. By hitting the inner ring players receive 50 points.
Checkouts
The aim of the game is to reach a score of exactly zero and this is where a strategic approach works best. By reaching a score of zero, a player has completed a “checkout” and has finished their game. A player with a score of 42 can achieve this by hitting a double 20 and single 2. To best calculate scores, the ability to do quick mental math is often helpful. One of the beautiful things about darts is exposure to mental mathematics which can improve cognitive functioning.
Etiquette
Darts at its heart is a social game which means that one must often observe proper etiquette while playing. To properly enjoy the game in a friendly and enjoyable way, players should wait their turn to throw their darts, avoid distracting their opponents, and show general respect for the other players’ throws.
A timeless game which can be enjoyed by people of any age, darts is a blend of strategic thinking, skill, and accuracy. Mastering the basics of the game will help set you on the path to becoming a formidable darts player. So, grab your darts, set up that board, and let the games begin!
